Nitro welcomes new municipal judge

NITRO, W.Va. Richard Walters was sworn in as Nitro's Municipal Court Judge during Tuesday's city council meeting. He assumes the bench from Shawn Taylor, who retired to devote more time to his private practice in Charleston.

Nitro Mayor Rusty Casto presented Taylor with a plaque for his service to the city. He was honored with a reception following the meeting.

As for his tenure with the city, Taylor said he was honored to serve the people of Nitro. His advice for the new judge was to be patient and use common sense.

"You know, people just want to be heard," he said.

Walters, a member of the Charleston firm Miller, Weiler and Walters, said he hoped to serve Nitro as well as Taylor had for the past five years.

"I look forward to learning the process and serving the city," he said.

Nitro Council approved Terradon as the Web designer for the city's new website, which should be up and running by Nov. 1.

Color Craft of Charleston was chosen to supply the materials for the municipal services fee billing at a rate of 21 cents for 3,500 invoices.

Council also decided to keep $250,000 in the Peoples Federal Credit Union.

City Treasurer John Young said the firm offered a 2.1 percent interest rate and assured him money would be available to the city the same day it was requested.

Young also asked council to consider raises for city personnel suggested by department heads. The matter will be taken up at the next council meeting.

A groundbreaking for the Nitro boat launch will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, with work starting Oct. 26.

Because of the Nov. 2 general election, Nitro's next council meeting will be held Nov. 8.
